ACTIVE WATER II – Second water quality monitoring report (October 2025)

Posted by

The Active Water II project, implemented by H2H Foundation in collaboration with Art Kontakt and North Green Association, aims to improve the assessment of surface water quality in Albania. During the second monitoring phase (October 2025), 13 strategic water bodies were analyzed across the municipalities of Shkoder, Vau i Dejes, Belsh, Elbasan, Tirane, Durres, Shijak, Fier and Pustec.

The results showed increased pollution from agricultural and urban sources, high levels of nitrates and potassium, elevated turbidity, and significant water mineralization, particularly in lakes and reservoirs used for irrigation, recreation, and aquaculture.

The report recommends strengthening monitoring efforts, improving wastewater treatment systems, promoting sustainable agricultural practices, and actively involving local communities in the protection of water resources.

This report was produced within the framework of the #GreenAL project “Support to Civil Society Organizations 2024 -2027”, financed by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) with funds from the Swedish Government and implemented by Co-PLAN, Institute for Habitat Development in collaboration with VIS Albania and COSV – Cooperazione per lo Sviluppo.
