SuS_AGRI – Training on on innovative methods to compare the impacts of climate change in the agricultural sector

Within the framework of the SuS_AGRI project, on February 24-27, 2025, in the premises of the Municipality of Roskovec, H2H Foundation organized a 4-day training on innovative methods to compare the impacts of climate change in the agricultural sector.

This training was attended by 4 farmers from Italy, 3 farmers from Montenegro and 10 farmers from Albania, who received knowledge and information about the impacts of climate change on the agricultural sector and what are some of the measures that farmers should take to mitigate them.

On the first day of the training, Expert Erjon Kalaja explained the main concepts related to irrigation practices and planning, the relationships between soil, water and plants and the main methods for irrigating agricultural lands. Expert Erdona Demiraj emphasized the importance of monitoring sustainable irrigation practices. Stakeholders should address cross-contamination and nutrient management and adopt fertigation practices in accordance with FAO standards for the best results. The second part of the training took place in the field where participants were introduced in a practical way to drip irrigation methods in one of the greenhouses in the Municipality of Roskovec.

On the second day of the training, farmers from Italy presented the work and agricultural practices they use on their farms. Expert Kujtim Mersini in the first lecture explained chapter 12 related to food safety and emphasized the need to ensure high standards of food safety, veterinary and phytosanitary measures in accordance with EU regulations. In the second lecture he explained the impacts of climate change on agricultural and livestock production and the practices followed to mitigate them in agriculture. After the explanatory lectures, the training continued in the field where the participants visited an agricultural farm where bees were used for natural pollination of tomato roots with drip irrigation system and a livestock farm.

On the third day of the training, the Mayor of Roskovec, Ms. Majlinda Bufi, joined the activity, who expressed her gratitude to all participants for their engagement, presentations and sharing of ideas throughout the training. She emphasized that the exchange of ideas plays a crucial role in promoting the necessary improvements in the agricultural sector, enabling innovation and promoting sustainable practices. Farmers from Montenegro presented the work and agricultural practices they use on their farms. Further, Expert Erjon Kalaja explained the importance of planning for the adaptation of the agricultural sector to climate change.

Expert Gentian Gace explained about intelligent irrigation systems and real-time monitoring of greenhouses using smart devices. The representative of H2H Foundation, Alisja Herri brought a case study on the effects of climate change on agricultural production in Spain. The second part of the training took place in the field where we visited the Kurjan reservoir which is used for irrigation of agricultural lands and a greenhouse for growing agricultural tomatoes where bees were used for natural pollination of the roots.

The fourth day of the training was held in a round table with representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), the Agency for Agricultural and Rural Development (AZHBR), the Municipality of Roskovec, farmers from Italy, Montenegro and Albania to discuss the challenges and necessary steps for sustainable agriculture. In the discussion panel, the director of the projects sector at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) presented the role of the ministry and future programs to support farmers for sustainable agriculture in Albania. During the discussion, farmers appreciated the continuous support of central and local institutions.

The training ended with the distribution of certificates to the farmers who were part of this training.
