The monitoring activities were carried out at the same sampling locations, using comparable physico-chemical and microbiological parameters.

Discussions were structured around three thematic panels:

The State of Water Bodies in Albania: The monitoring results highlighted recurring pressures on water resources, including untreated urban wastewater discharges, agricultural and livestock activities, organic waste, sedimentation and, in certain locations, industrial pollution. Priority areas identified included Tafanë Lake, Vija e Ngjalës, the Artificial Lake of Tirana and the Hamallaj pumping station–Adriatic Sea drainage system.

The Impact of Water Pollution on Tourism, Agriculture and Public Health: Discussions focused on the risks associated with using contaminated water for irrigation, soil and crop contamination, exposure of farmers and consumers, and the impact of water pollution on recreational and tourist areas.

Long-term Monitoring and Self-Monitoring: Participants discussed institutional responsibilities, coordination challenges, the lack of harmonised monitoring standards and the need for a more effective self-monitoring mechanism. Proposed measures included unified protocols, accredited laboratories, electronic reporting and independent inspections.

The conference concluded with several key recommendations, including strengthening the coordinating role of the National Agency for Water Resources Management (AMBU), harmonising monitoring methodologies and frequencies, establishing a shared and transparent water quality data platform, and developing targeted intervention plans for critical water bodies.

A key message emerging from the discussions was that water monitoring must go beyond identifying pollution. Monitoring results should translate into concrete, measurable and verifiable actions to protect and rehabilitate Albania’s water resources.

H2H Foundation extends its appreciation to all participants and institutions for their valuable contributions and commitment. Strong institutional cooperation, data transparency and shared responsibility are essential to ensuring the sustainable management of water resources in Albania.

Together for cleaner waters and a healthier environment!

The activity was carried out within the framework of the #GreenAL project “Support to Civil Society Organizations 2024 -2027”, financed by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) with funds from the Swedish Government and implemented by Co-PLAN, Institute for Habitat Development in collaboration with VIS Albania and COSV – Cooperazione per lo Sviluppo.

On September 30, 2026, the final conference of the “Active Water II” project was held, bringing together stakeholders to present the results of water body monitoring and discuss the key

[29,28
342,582,580,196,579,195,271,581,575,577,343,578,574,380,576,573
post-1571","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-activities","category-events","tag-active-water-ii","tag-agriculture-and-public-health","tag-agriculture-and-public-health-discussions-focused-on-the-risks-associated-with-using-contaminated-water-for-irrigation","tag-environmentalprotection","tag-exposure-of-farmers-and-consumers","tag-greenal-en","tag-h2h-foundation-en","tag-impact-of-water-pollution-on-tourism","tag-public-health","tag-soil-and-crop-contamination","tag-sustainable-development","tag-the-impact-of-water-pollution-on-tourism","tag-water-protection","tag-water-quality","tag-water-resources-in-albania","tag-watermonitoring
["GET
