On 21 July 2026, the second coastal waste monitoring activity was carried out at the Public Beach near Tarin Stream as part of the RIVERCLEAN Project, with the support of volunteers from Rotary Club Tirana International and Horizons to Sustainability.
The monitoring site was located along the Lalëz coastline, an area of significant natural and recreational value. During the activity, the presence, types, and quantities of waste were observed, identified, and recorded following the standardised beach waste monitoring methodology.
The activity aimed to provide a clearer understanding of the pollution situation in the area by identifying the main types of waste, assessing their potential sources, and evaluating their impacts on coastal and marine ecosystems. It also served to raise awareness about the importance of reducing plastic waste and protecting natural environments.
Key Findings
- 690 waste items recorded in 100 metres of coastline;
- 23.495 kg of waste collected in total;
- 17.595 kg of plastic waste;
- 5.9 kg of other waste.
The results indicate a significant level of waste pollution, with plastic waste representing the largest proportion of the materials recorded. The collected data will support future actions aimed at protecting coastal areas, reducing pollution, and promoting more sustainable waste management practices.
This activity is implemented within the framework of the RIVERCLEAN initiative, carried out by ETMI and Milieukontakt Albania, with the support of the European Union.
