On 20 July 2026, the second coastal waste monitoring activity was carried out at Lalëz Beach as part of the RIVERCLEAN Project, with the support of volunteers from Rotary Club Tirana International and Horizons to Sustainability (H2H Foundation).
The selected monitoring site was located along the Lalëz coastline, an area of significant natural and recreational value that is increasingly exposed to pressures from human activities and pollution caused by plastic waste.
During the activity, the presence, types, and quantities of waste were observed and recorded following the standardised beach waste monitoring methodology. The monitoring aimed to provide a clearer understanding of the pollution situation in the area by identifying the most common waste items, exploring their potential sources, and assessing their impacts on coastal and marine ecosystems. The activity also contributed to raising public awareness about the importance of reducing plastic waste and protecting natural environments.
Key Findings
- 377 waste items recorded in 100 metres of coastline;
- 16 kg of waste collected in total;
- 5.6 kg of plastic waste;
- 10.3 kg of other waste.
The findings indicate that coastal and marine waste, particularly plastic waste, continues to pose a significant challenge to the protection of coastal ecosystems. The collected data will support efforts to identify effective measures for preventing and reducing pollution while promoting more sustainable waste management practices.
